Two Questions to Ask Yourself Before Going Off In Social Media

October 09, 2017 by K. Jackson in life, mental wellness

Lately I have been having all of the feels. The news is so depressing. It seems as if we are bombarded with messages of all the evil in this world on a daily basis. I can't even enjoy social media because every other post is an image of negativity or a response to world events. Last night I was on Facebook and saw people sharing posts about the recent events in Las Vegas and the lack of aid for hurricane survivors in Puerto Rico. With each post, I could feel my heart begin to race and I started to think about how I was going to comment on the posts in an effort to "school" or clapback at some of the ignorance I was reading. I was emotionally reacting to a post because someone I respect had linked to it. I started to question who they were as a person and forgot that they have a right to their own opinion.

I had to tell myself to stop. Just stop. And then log the heck off.

In this age when world news is at our fingertips and it seems as if everyone is an expert, it can be easy to get caught up in the foolishness. If you find yourself getting warped into social media stupidity and one step from going on a rant in someone's comment section, do the following:

Ask yourself:

1. Am I making a statement to have a meaningful conversation?

2. Will my comment/post escalate a situation or provide some insights?

I asked myself those two questions and I found my reasons for posting were not good. I had to check myself because my intention for engaging in conversation online was to satisfy my ego. Also, what good does a social media rant do if it does not evolve to action in the community or meaningful conversations in person? There is so much work to do for ourselves, for those we interact with, and for the world. So the next time you find yourself gearing up for to go off on social media: stop, reflect, check your intentions.

One of my favorite shows is “Grey’s Anatomy”. The main character, Meredith, and her best friend Cristina would dance whenever they had stressful situations. If they had a difficult day at work, they’d dance it out. If they were frustrated, they’d dance it out. If they woke up on the wrong side of the bed, they’d dance it out. You get the point. These fictional characters had a good coping choice.
Dancing helps reduce stress, depression and anxiety, and can instantly boost our mood. Not to mention dancing is a great workout and if you grab a friend, is an awesome way to socialize and feel connected to others.
While dancing won’t eliminate your problems or stressors, it can help you relax the mind so you can game plan on your steps to address the problem. Even five minutes at the start of your day or otherwise can be helpful. Try it. Let’s dance it out!

#mentalwellness #dancetherapy #simplybeingkryssie #mentalhealth Let me go ahead and raise my hand 🙋🏾‍♀️. I’m straight up talking to myself with this one.
We now live in a time when it is as normal to check our phone as it is to breathe. We are constantly distracted and consumed with virtual content. Whether it’s social media, Netflix, or games, we have been conditioned to reach for our electronics throughout the day. Don’t get me wrong, I check social media quite often. But I have recently began to notice how much social media effects my mental state. We are seeing snapshots of people “living their best life” all the time. Seeing these images over and over can lead to feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, decreased self-worth, and possibly depression or anxiety. ——————————————
It’s funny how I can say I don’t have time to meditate, exercises, be creative, or limit prayer but i can spend an hour scrolling through IG stories. 🤦🏾‍♀️ self-care (spiritually, mentally, and physically) depends on us. I just realized how fast the days are passing by. One day I was starting college and now I’m in my mid 30’s. This is bananas. •

In this period of my life, I hear so many of my peers speak about what they intended to do or who they thought they’d be at this age. And it makes me think about all the pressure we put on ourselves to be or do something with age being a guiding factor. As I age, I see how ridiculous it was for me to believe I could be so many different things when I barely knew myself. •
•
Here’s the reminder to take some of the pressure off. I don’t feel bound by my age, I feel grateful. Age is a number that indicates we have been blessed to have more days on this earth, age does not limit us. Age expands us. •

An exercise I do whenever I begin to feel limited due to my age: I think of awesome people who have accomplished great things later in life and I give myself credit for what I have accomplished. Love these manifestation cards from @bwfwoman. I met the founder, Erin, on the ride to the airport as we left the #mtyretreat. We almost didn’t connect but I am glad we did as she has been such a light to me. These cards came at the right time as I have recently become intentional about taking time to visualize my life. Head over to her page to order. •

My current manifestation mantra: I am abundant. Good things flow my way and I receive them graciously. Guess what? Today is my one year blog anniversary!! One year ago today, I posted my very first blog titled, “Because Connecting With People Is My Gift”. I wrote about my reason for starting this blog and my vision to share about mental wellness and my life lessons. I am honored to be able to share this journey with you. Thank you for every like, comment, dm, share, and word of encouragement. I am taking some time to reflect on this past year and what I foresee for my blogging future. I am open to the journey. I embrace my creative spirit. I am grateful for the ability to simply be. ✨

#blackgirljoy #iconicgirls #doperherapist #blogiversary #oneyeardone #firstyearcomplete #simplybeing #simplybeingkryssie I was listening to a podcast and the topic turned to trusting your discernment. Kids do this without question. If someone is mean to them, they stop playing with that person. They honor what feels good to them. As we get older, we choose the people we give value to and sometimes allow relationships to go on that no longer serve us. The right relationships will affirm and empower you. Seek those relationships. #selfcaresundaymoment This week has been relatively quiet for me. I’ve been working on some things in my personal and professional life which prompted me to take a step back from the socials. As I approach my blog anniversary, I can’t help but reflect on the year past and the years ahead. So I’m taking a little time and I’ll be back soon. —————
Ready to catch a flight somewhere. Escapism ya it’s best lol. Where to next? #catchflightsandfeeling #travelingistherapeutic It all starts when we make a decision to look within and be okay with being uncomfortable. And then we make that decision again and again. .

#mondaythought #healjngjourney #change In 2007 I was ushered in with a group of alumni and students to have a few moments with Dr. Maya Angelou. She was the closing keynote speaker at the Bay Path College’s Women’s Leadership Conference. Although I had not attended the conference, I still had connections to the school and my college advisor allowed me in. She knew this would be an important moment in my life. I wish I could recall what Dr. Angelou said, but I don’t. ————-
What I do remember is the feeling of being in the same room with a woman who had lived and spent her life sharing her experiences to help heal others. I felt the magnitude of her spirit. Her compassion, her wisdom, her strength, her peace. She reminded me of my Grandmother and I am forever grateful for the experience. —————
“Life is pure adventure, and the quicker we realize that, the quicker we will be able to treat life as art.” -Dr. Maya Angelou Oh Friday! I am so happy to see you. 😏
