Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to highlighting mental health including education, support, and recovery. Started in 1949 by Mental Health America, each year is dedicated to a theme and encourages organizations to have activities and education based on that theme. Its purpose is to raise awareness and educate the public about: mental illnesses, the realities of living with these conditions; and strategies for attaining mental health and wellness. It also aims to draw attention to suicide, which can be precipitated by some mental illnesses. Additionally, Mental Health Awareness Month strives to reduce the stigma (negative attitudes and misconceptions) that surrounds mental illnesses. The month came about by presidential proclamation. This year's theme is Fitness #4Mind4Body. NAMI's theme is "Cure the Stigma".

I am glad there are more conversations about mental health, mental illness, and mental wellness. It is time we normalize taking care of our emotional health. As a licensed therapist, I spend a lot of time helping my clients to understand their emotional health and identify what they need to do, be, or think to sustain their mental wellness. It has been long time to wipe away the stigma of mental illness.

This month, you'll see posts dedicated to mental health awareness. Here's a throwback to last year's post about mental health and suicide prevention. Click here
